Companies want in on iPod Touch’s new point-of-sale system, says Apple Insider. This is a device that attaches to any iPhone or iPod Touch and allows anyone to accept credit card payments. Just need to be hooked to wi-fi, swipe the card, get the signature and boom, mo’ money right there, holmes. In the Apple Store, they can check you out by walking right up to you. No need to wait in line. Pretty cool if you ask me.
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey is coming out with competition for Apple’s doo-hicky, according to PC World. It’s called Square, a square little doo-hicky that attaches to your iPod Touch’s headphone jack. Does the same thing. Dorsey’s mission is to eliminate cash from this Earth. He hates spare change.
There are also a couple of GPS gadgets available, though they’re kind of pricey. There’s one from Magellan that’s $129.99. Can’t you get a standalone GPS for that much? It looks pretty cool though, and it’s a charger as well. Though I believe the app costs $100, which is a total rip. You pay that much for the thing and they still want you to buy the software? That’s robbery.
The Tom Tom car kit is similarly priced. $220 for the gadget + the app. I guess it does the exact same thing. Probably be a tossup between the two, but I don’t think I’ll be finding out anytime soon. Too rich for my blood.
Another iPhone/iPod Touch gadget that’s coming soon is the Re, a little doohicky that attaches to the bottom of the iPod. It enables infrared control and turns your iPod into a universal remote control, pretty novel idea. I don’t really have a use for such a thing as I have a dedicated Phillips universal remote that does a pretty good job. And battery power would seem to be an issue. But if you’re real lazy and always have your iPhone on you, maybe you’ll like it.
Thinkflood has launched a similar system called the RedEye. It costs $188, which is extremely pricey. RedEye is an infrared device and your iPod communicates with the RedEye via wi-fi. The RedEye then controls your AV equipment. This enables you to control stuff from outside the room. That’s a novel idea as well, but I don’t see too much use for it as I like to be in the room where my TV is. And for that price, that’s a bit too much for a remote control, don’t ya think?
