At the Pepcom Digital Experience, we spoke with Jason Meyer, the project manager for the line of Epson projectors on display which is quite reasonable in pricing ($549.99 to sub $1000).  Particularly impressive was the EX71, a WXGA (16:10) projector that retails for $749.99.  The EX71 was projecting a Blu-ray copy of Planet Earth in a fairly well lit room and the picture was vibrant and sharp with brilliant color.  The brilliant color comes from their three-chip 3 LCD technology, which dispenses with the color wheel of a single-chip DLP projector.  Rated at 2500 lumens, that rating is actually a measure of the white light (ANSI lumens).  The industry doesn’t measure in color light (ISO lumens) but Epson does, and they claim that their color brightness is the same as their white light brightness.  For example, their competitor might rate something at 2500 lumens but that’s only for the white light, while the color light would rate at only 1500 lumens.  The Epson projector would rate 2500 lumens for white and  color light.  Their color is more accurate and just looks better.  Looks beautiful.

Also on display was the MovieMate 60 ($699.99), an all-in-one unit for projecting on the go.  It features a built-in CD/DVD player and a built-in pair of 10 watt speakers.  It puts out 2000 lumens of color and white light output with a WSVGA (16:9) display.  It’s capable of projecting a 60 inch image from just 6 feet away, or a 120 inch image from 12 feet away.  With an integrated microphone input, it’s capable of voice amplification or even karaoke.  Nice for the backyard or anywhere you might want to project.  All you need is an electrical outlet.
