I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, Tech Bucket Blog absolutely enjoyed out time at Pepcom’s Digital Experience. So much so, that we’re still writing articles from the event.

Our appreciation of the event is only equaled by our enjoyment of Plantronics headsets. Tech Bucket Blog absolutely prefers Plantronics, let’s just make that clear. We like the others from Jabra, Motorola, and others, but nothing speaks to our inner geek like Plantronics.

The reason? Well, you should know that Apollo missions used Plantronics and in 1969, Neil Armstrong spoke through on. So when we’re using our headsets, we can’t help ourselves but utter “Houston, the Eagle…”well, you know.

Tech Bucket Blog spent time with Plantronics’ new models: Discovery 975 and Voyager Pro UC.

First up, Discovery 975:

This shouldn’t really be called a headset. The tiny and minimal form-factor should be called earpiece. It looks sexy and comes with a leather case/charger. The charger, is what really makes the headset stand out. You can charge the earpiece with batteries, USB, wall, and car charger. Plantronics’ simple design allows you pop the earpiece in and out without an ear hook, so you’re not in the car or walking around just fumbling to get the earpiece on.

Plantronics assured us that the built in 3 screen active wind and noise canceling technologies on board allows the user to communicate in some of the noisy conditions that folks like to walk around in.

Next up, Plantronics Voyager Pro UC:

This is probably the “standard” Plantronics form-factor that we all know them for. The battery behind the ear model. Many people love this style while others complain of being too heavy uncomfortable. The Voyager Pro UC should make both types really happy.

It’s really light and well balanced. Plantronics’ demoed this feature for us (unfortunately Mr. Shakey Hands met Mr. Blurry Cam and resulted in this:

The pen is basically where the top of your ear would be. It’s really light and extremely comfortable. The boom mic is really flexible so you won’t get it cutting in your cheek and screen on the mic is smoothed out such that you don’t feel like you’re getting a shave everytime you put it on.

But, the biggest feature is the ability to go from phone to desk (PC, office lines) without any issues. Single button press is supported in just about all the popular office phones (VOIP and non-VOIP phones). So, you can use it with your phone, PC, and office line. That makes the phone pretty cool. But Plantronics also built in the wind screen and noise cancelation technologies into the headset.

Not enough? Well, there’s also AudioIQ2 built into both sets.

We didn’t get to test the voice and call qualities on the floor, not because we weren’t offered, but because Tech Bucket Blog Editors are just hypochondriacs. You’re putting something in your ear that thousands of people put in their ear!

Both are available now at around $99 for Discovery 975 and $199 for Voyager Pro UC.

(Editor’s Note: So, I recently got all the Editors at Tech Bucket Blog a Plantronics Discovery 655. It’s an older model, but works perfectly fine. The price point (around $29-$30) was worth it. The thing looks like a $99 model (and was when it first came out a few years back).

But now that our Editors have peep at these two new models, they’re all saying: “Two models really impressed us and left my guys thinking…”WTF? Buy these for us!!!”
