3D TV is all over the place at CES. It seems like every major company that makes TV’s is making a 3D TV. In addition to LG, Tech Bucket Blog also saw 3D systems from Sony, Samsung, Panasonic, Toshiba, nVidia, and more. Sharp is also working on one that’s still in development. It seems like it’s more than just a gimmick. It looks like a trend.
nVidia has a 3D gaming system and on display was Avatar: The Game. It was 3 projectors combining to a super widescreen. Polarized glasses were required and I thought the effect was pretty immersive. Foreground action was in your face and when the character moved forward, an impressive depth of field was revealed. Objects in the distance really looked in the distance. I don’t know if it’s going to make you play a better game, but it’ll make you feel more like you’re inside the game.
Sony is an 800 pound gorilla so of course they want in on the 3D game. I was not impressed by their 3D displays. There was a lot of flickering that was noticeable, and that resulted in some blurred motion. Their 3D cameras certainly look impressive, just not the displays. Perhaps they still need to work out some kinks.
Samsung is an 800 pound gorilla as well and they’re getting in on 3D also. I found their 3D similar in quality to Sony’s. There wasn’t flicker present but it looked like a bunch of layered 2D images moving in front of one another. Didn’t like it too much.
Panasonic had 3D displays also and I found them to be similar in quality to Samsung’s. Not too good, with a similar layered 2D image effect. They were using button cell batteries to power their glasses and I was not happy with the results.
In short, the 3D displays I found mediocre were Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic. nVidia was a different application (games) but I liked it. The most impressive were LG and Toshiba. More on Toshiba to come!
