Tech Bucket Blog stopped by to look at Psyko 5.1 surround sound cans (headphones) earlier today.
We got in line and tried them on. They’re pretty comfortable, big cans, but surprisingly light and easy to wear. Sound quality was pretty good and we got a go around with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare2. The biggest feature of these cans is that they can do 5.1 surround over headphones.
I’ve tried 5.1 cans before and I can’t say that I’ve ever been impressed. That being said, I ran ahead of all my squad mates as they were firing and yelling commands at me to see if I could hear them behind me.
The verdict: I could, but in a weird kind of way. This is not discrete 5.1 and it’ll never be that over 2 speakers strapped to your head. That being said, I could hear gun fire and yelling just over the top of my ear-lobes. The sound stage is definitely wider, but again…it’s not a discrete 5.1 so you lose a little something.
Then I died a horrible in-game death from the combination of friendly fire behind me and enemy fire in front of me.
