Samsung’s 9000 series LED TV’s are thin and beautiful. There’s really no other way to describe it. Samsung reports thickness at less than 8mm or around 1/3 of an inch. It really can’t get much thinner. The LCD panel itself, can’t be physically that much thinner than 8mm.

Available sometime in 2010 and no prices were available on the show floor. However, Tech Bucket Blog has learned that pricing would be close to the current high-end sets, so somewhere higher than $5,000 (not by much). No surpise there.

That doesn’t provide much information in the form of pricing and certainly should be no surprise to anyone.

The specs on this set is absolutely amazing and it’s officially thinner than LG’s thin sets. However, there’s definite room for marketing spin on thickness. As with anything, it’s up for interpretation.

LG’s thinnest set is at around 25mm or .98 inches. However, when we looked at the LG set, it’s pretty clear that the set is that thick throughout the body. So, I can understand that perhaps (and I’m guessing here) LG is reporting .98inches at the set’s thickest point.

Contrast that to Samsung’s 9000 series, which Samsung may claim (again my pure speculation and opinon) is 8mm thick at it’s thinnest point, thus the thinnest form-factor title goes to Samsung.

The 9000 series achieves it by placing the majority of the electronics into the bezel/base. That’s where things get even more interesting. The bezel actually does double duty. It’s also a rear mounting solution, so you don’t need to purchase any additional components to rear mount (besides the basic things like a mount point). The bezel slides into the rear.

Some other spec information that we were told by Samsung’s many reps on the floor:

9000 series will support 3D, offer 240hz, 1080p, as well as an updated edge lighting system. To save energy and weight, Samsung is sporting the 9000 with top and bottom edge lighting.

I was expecting a loss in picture quality, but I’m really pleased to report, the picture is amazing.

Personally, I like the set. The shiney, stainless steel finish is super sexy. No rounded edges here, the 9000 series offers dramatically cut edges that really make it stand out. I’m completely cool with the non-matte-black finish that’s the norm. To quote Guido from Cars, the set screams…”here I am…Looovee me!”
