Apple’s switched to talking about iWork on the iPad right now, so we’re going to look into what they’ve announced about content on iPad.
It should be no surprise, web, newspapers and traditional printed media, movies, games and books take center stage on iPad. You’ve got apps like Facebook and Google Maps, but those apps are essentially beefier than what you’re seen on the iPhone/iPod Touch. You could even make the argument that the entire content is essentially beefier iPhone/iPod Touch, and you’d be right for the most part.
On newspapers and print media, you’re looking at NY Times, WSJ, and a host of other companies. You’ll be able to read their digital newspapers like you would a regular paper, but it also comes alive with rich media experiences like photos/videos/audio all inside the same article. You tap and enjoy. It’s actually pretty cool, not unique, but cool.
For games, you’re looking at much better graphics on probably the biggest screen for portable gaming to date (your 17″ laptop doesn’t count). Slick interface that will play existing iPhone/iPod Touch games and enlarge the games to fit the screen. So that’s cool. But devs will also be able to create games specifically for the iPad and take advantage of its hardware.
Books and movies is where iPad will really stand out. You’ll be able to preview books and movies, just like you can today on Amazon or iTunes Store. But, with Apple, looks like no publisher wanted to be left out of the iPod for books. They’ve got a whole lot of them. A lot more a-listers than Nook or Kindle, and that’s going to hurt.
And how do you access this content? Apple announced 3G over ATT’s network. It’s going to hurt is our prediction, but it’s priced really nicely at $29 per month for “unlimted” data plan, and no contract. You cancel any time, no ETF.
