We tried Domino’s Pizza last week and fitting to try another pizza this week. Especially with one of America’s most popular pizza days right around the corner, Super Bowl Sunday. It’s the equivalent of Thanksgiving for pizzas. Just about everyone watching the game will be munching on some sort of pizza.
It’s fitting then, and more than a little planned, that Pizza Hut rolls out it’s $10 for any pizza, any size this week. It’s crazy, but you’d be silly to order anything other than a large specialty pizza, as that’s probably the best deal.
So, that’s just what we did. Tech Bucket Blog ordered two pizzas: large pan pizza Super Surpreme and large hand-tossed cheese lover’s. Just like last week, with the exception of having Bubba in Singapore, most of the gang were around including two from our testing team.
Ordering on-line was pretty straight forward. Although their coupon/discount system needs to be looked at. Our original go around ordered up our pizza’s at almost $40 bucks for two large. Domino’s Pizza on-line ordering just seemed a bit more interactive, but Pizza Hut’s is straightforwrd, nothing fancy.

Everyone’s had Pizza Hut before and almost all recently within in the past 3-4 months or less. There weren’t any changes to talk about. If there were, we didn’t notice. We judged on same criteria as last week, cheese, sauce, crust, and overall taste.
Here we go:

Compared to last week, I like Pizza Hut better. Certain pizza snobs (the ungrateful, unappreciative kind) still think that they’re East Coast pizzas are better, Pizza Hut is consistent. No matter where in the world I go (Australia, Singapore, Taiwan, Singapore, and France), they all taste the same. It’s like MacDonald’s for pizza. Each area has maybe a slight twist to it, but it’s basically the same.
Crust: Greasy and salty. Crispy, tastey, yes, but still too greasy for me. Bubba would love this.
Sauce: Not a big sauce gal in pizza. I go easy on the sauce, so wrong person to comment.
Cheese: What you’d expect from pizza, the cheese is good.
Overall: I like Pizza Hut, it’s not bad, not great, but good. The best part about it, is it tastes good cold the next morning too. You can’t beat it with a side of breakfast beer. Warm, fuzzy, breakfast beer and cold pizza. What? You think I have a problem or something? I don’t.

Another week of freeee? No complaints! Pizza Hut is good and I like it once in a while. Not all the time though.
Crust: Crispy, but a little greasy and salty for me. The Boys loved it.
Sauce: Okay, about the same as last week.
Cheese: Tastes great, especially the extra cheese. Chewy just like melted mozzarella should be.
Overall: Free?? I’m not complaining. Not a bad choice either.

I prefer local pizza compared to chain style places. It might be consistent every time and everywhere you go, but there’s just a certain flair and local flavor to a neighborhood joint. Unfortunately, it’s a little tough to find a local joint in The Bay Area that doesn’t try to make their pizza taste like a chain. It’s strange, but that’s just my take on it.
That being said, Pizza Hut is not an overly bad choice. It’s pretty safe and you’ll find something that most everyone likes. Maybe a little too liberal on the salt, though. Folks will tell you, salt does not equal flavor, and Pizza Hut should learn this lesson.
Personally, I like the greasy-ness that’s almost a signature of the pan pizza. It’s not healthy and doesn’t try to be. Besides, that extra grease is what makes it taste so good when it’s cold. Perhaps that is Pizza Hut’s defining characteristic, tastey, greasy, cold pizza.
Crust: Crispity-crunchity-greasity, goodness.
Sauce: It’s just an afterthought mostly. The saltiness of the crust, toppings and cheese just leave the sauce tasteless. Try and notice it, you won’t.
Cheese: Gooey cheese. My mom always liked Pizza Hut because it was one of the only places she says you can pull a slice away and have it look like the stretchy cheese in the commercials.
Overall: Totally worth it for $10 for a large. This is the price that I’m used to paying back in Buffalo, although the large there is at least 30% bigger than Pizza Hut’s large. Regular price for Super Surpreme is a bit high, so take advantage.

We’re with Joanne on this. It’s free and we never turn down free food. Sorry we missed the free Domino’s last week.
Crust: Free pizza? We don’t complain.
Sauce: It’s pizza, you’re expecting filet mignon?
Cheese: Melted, over crust and sauce.
Overall: Free. We like free.
So there you have it. Everyone pretty much agreed you can’t go wrong ordering it for a Super Bowl party provided there’s other things around it and at $10 during the promotion, it’s not a terrible deal. Regular price, and we’d probably collectively say no (Costco here we come), but at $10, it’s not a bad deal at all.
(Editor’s Note: This is an independent taste test on the part of Tech Bucket Blog. As with all our reviews, we were not paid or compensated in anyway. We ordered and paid for our pizza ourselves and Pizza Hut neither supported nor were they aware of our testing.)
