The Apple Store went down for an update yesterday and it caused a flurry of rumors. We got reports of everything from MacBook Pro speed upgrades to new iPods coming in.
Sifting through it all though was a really interesting Macbook Air rumor that hasn’t been really picked up by anyone lately. It seems that many folks are speculating, especially with certain UWB radios used for wireless USB applications running low these days, that Apple is working to add wireless USB onto their MacBook Air line.
Not a surprise that Apple would do something like that right now, especially with UWB really pushing and enabling wireless USB products today. If you’ve been following our UWB coverage, then you’ll understand when we say, UWB is really on a cusp these days and next few months will have more and more vendors like Apple slap wireless USB (and therefore UWB) on their laptops and desktops.
It’s all in Apple’s MO to do this now too, so we’re putting a little more credence into the rumors. They’ve done this with on-board wireless technologies like WiFi and bluetooth slapping it on their laptops at similar stages in the technology’s life-cycle (in this case UWB) and driving it into a standard when all other makers follow them.

HP, Lenovo, and Dell have all announced UWB radios on board in their business class laptops. So I fully expect Apple to do the same. Not on a MacBook Pro, but on the MacBook Air. It just fits with MacBook Air’s almost port-less design. Now, it can really go truly port-less and Apple can sell a display adapter or a dock adapter for their monitors and keyboards and offer you a truly wireless, connected laptop solution.
Besides, which one would you rather own? A Dell or a sexy thin MacBook Air? For me? I’m going with the MacBook Air.
We’ll be looking out for it. It might not happen until summer/WWDC time frame, but you should be expecting it soon.
Oh, and the Apple Store update? Just Aperture. Nothing fancy.
