Day 2 of our emergency food taste testing. Not bad so far. Breakfast for me started out with granola today. I love granola. Crunchy nutrition. Eat it by itself, or add fruit and many some milk and it’s a great breakfast, lunch, dinner, or quick snack.
Healthy nutrition and great tasting that satisfies your sweet tooth at the same time. You can’t beat it.
When I go camping or hiking, I bring granola (granola bars for a hike) along with me. If it’s a week-long camp out, I’ll pick up some powdered milk and some dried fruit with me, so Mountain House’s granola-blueberries-and milk pack completely reminded me of the outdoors. Last time I went camping, I brought along 10lbs of granola in my pack. Everyone was happy with it as hot granola is really something your body takes a while to process. Real dense food energy.
You can typically mix this yourself, but it was a nice addition in the 72-hour pack. Taste and texture wise, I was really surprised to find the freeze-dried version dead on to what I’m used to. Just a little sweeter than normal, but you can always add more water to dilute it.
Crunchy, warm goodness. You can’t complain.

For lunch and dinner, Shawn picked up on the veggies and I was happy to try it. Cooking instructions are the same, boil water, mix, seal, and sit for 8 minutes. I decided to try the cold water solution. The package does say that in extreme emergencies, you could use cold water instead of boiling water. So I tried it.
The results? Not bad. Tasted just like cold leftovers veggies. I’m not a fan of corn, but I actually like the veggieness of whole or cut green beans. More spongey though, but I’m guessing that I had used hot water, I would given more heat for “cooking” and rehydrating.
All three meal packs added together were just under 1000 calories. I’m not feeling at all hungry like last week’s food bars, but instead, I’m feeling pretty normal.
Last day of testing tomorrow and I’m hoping it only gets better.
