So Android also has it’s own version of Path Of A Warrior by Gamevil. This game is available on iPhone as well. Gamevil has been one our favorite devs on Android as their games (okay, even though they’re ports sometimes) show equal parts quality and polish.

That being said, Path Of A Warrior gets beat up a lot in the reviews already out there. A lot of folks don’t like the control scheme. For Droid, you have to open up the keyboard and use the junk d-pad and middle button to control your warrior. On screen touches activate magic and potions, but the main control is done through the d-pad.

Lots of available options will keep RPG fans satisfied as your warrior grows with experience from each mission and you can allocate attribute points as you please.

There’s a story here, but I skipped it and went straight for the action (sorry Gamevil!)

Graphics are pretty good and the game plays like a Dynasty Warriors iso-metric non-polygon view. If that makes sense to you. You proceed on the battle field fighting chump pawns until you get to the main general/king/boss guy on the field. Magic spells that you learn as your character progresses will allow you to increase things like defense, attack, and speed. All things that you’d expect from an RPG.

You can pick-up weapon, armor, and item upgrades as well, and boy are there a ton of those. From battle armor, swords, axes, hats, gauntlets, boots, rings, you name it, you’ve got it. The customization for your character is almost endless and there’s a lot packed into this game.

Sound is pretty fitting and 16-bit-ish. Not a bad thing as it fits with the overall feel of the game.

However, the controls are going to kill you. Really. I don’t blame Gamevil here as really, the Droid’s d-pad and keyboard are terrible. You’ll frequently mis-step or mis-attack and get burned because of it. I do think that Gamvil could have addressed this issue with an on-screen control or some sort of touch interface a-la their iPhone version.

Still, if you get used to the controls, you’ll only miss a few moves and it’s easily overlooked in the free version of this game. Oh, and free means limited to a certain experience level. Once you hit that point, you’ll have pay or start all over again.

I have to warn you though, if you like RPGs this one will be addicting to you and you’ll want to pay for the full version. There’s a multiplayer mode which presumably allows you to take your character on-line and battle it out against unknown foes around the world. That in and of itself is enough motivation for me to pay for the game…except for the control scheme.

If that gets improved, it’s an instant purchase for me.

Otherwise, give the free app a download and get hooked like me. If you can overlook the controls after your trial is up, then go ahead and give it a purchase. You won’t be disappointed (especially if you’re on an android device with decent keyboard).
