Yes. PS3 now has motion controllers. It’s not what you expect though and it’s just different from Wii and closer to Xbox 360’s version than Nintendo’s.

Playstation Move will feature motion sensitive controllers through the use of PS3’s camera attachment.

Yup, it’s like the Eye Toy (I still have it and love it on PS2), but now you’ve got controllers with light orbs that the camera will be tracking for movement as well as on-board accelerometers a-la Wii-mote controller.

Move will work over bluetooth and offer you multi-axes tracking and motion interpretation. Throw in PS3’s killer graphics and you’d forget about Wii HD. What? Wii what now? Uhh…3-5 years away? Hmm…I think maybe PS3 is looking better and better.

Sure, Wii does the same thing right now with 2 accelerometers (with Wii Motion Plus) and the LED sensor bar. But Sony ups the ante with a camera doing the job of Nintendo’s two blinkity-blinks. Just because it’s a camera, and not a blinky-blink, tracking the big orbs (a-la mo-cap technology in the movies today) will be sharper and more responsive than Wii’s solution.

One problem though is price. Move will not be cheap. It’s going to be under $100 and we’re thinking $99.99 is under $100 enough for Sony’s tastes. The “starter” kit, will include a pack-in game (something that’s Wii Sports easy, but PS3 graphically sharp), camera, and two Move controllers (one with orb and one without) for you to hold ninja nunchuk style.

While everything looks interesting, I think the price is going to kill it. There’s no sense in spending $299 for PS3 and then stepping up for $200 (you need more than 1 if you have any friends, right?) a controller.

Still, the same math in Nintendo is only slightly cheaper. Let’s see now, $30 for a Wii-mote, $20 for nunchuk controller, and another $20 for Wii Motion-Plus.

Actually, I just shot myself in the foot there. Just a $30 delta between the Wii-mote solution and Move? Maybe folks will pay more for Wii controller with PS3 graphics.

Nintendo, I think Sony just called you out. You’d better do something quick, or the next move you make might be your last.

(Editor’s Note: I can’t help it. When I saw “Move” was the name, the only thing I could think of is one of my favorite late 80’s/early ’90’s bands call Kon-Kan. Check ‘em out below and rock-on like it’s 1992.)
