Yesterday came news of Nintendo’s 3DS, a 3D portable game console that will display 3D images without the use of glasses on a similar formfactor as Nintendo’s DSi XL. Two screens, touch, camera, etc that can play all DSiWare and DS games available today as well as 3D.

We speculated that the screen will probably be something like the FujiFilm FinePix 3D camera and might employ a parallax barrier LCD or some type of special screen like that.

Of course, the fine folks at Sony (I have a PSP and I happen to enjoy it) want you to know that Nintendo’s console isn’t a big deal. In fact, their PS3 will be able to do 3D soon via a firmware upgrade.

Sorry Sony, but comparing a portable console to your powerhouse at home console is a little bit, I dunno…silly? I mean, is the PSP that bad? We just don’t see how the PS3 being able to do 3D is relevant in this case. 3DS is portable and personal machine, not a stay at home hook up to a $3,500 3D set with $200 glasses type of deal. We saw the article over at CNet.com and just couldn’t let it slide.

Personally, I think Nintendo’s 3DS will work. I happen to agree with our commentary. Nintendo has proven time and again that when it comes to the DS, people will buy what they want. DS Lite and DSi still coexist and some folks will go with a lower cost DS Lite and forgo the features of the DSi, while others go the opposite way.

Nintendo knows who pays for this stuff: the parents. Enticing parents is just as important as enticing the kids. Parents are going to be intrigued by a console that displays 3D images without having to pay for anything else.

My belief is Nintendo will most likely kill off the DS Lite and offer DSi, DSi XL, and 3DS into this space with a price cut on DSi of course. 3DS will probably fit into the price range of PSP-Go and might be offered up at $229 or more. It makes sense and I think people will buy it if the 3D works well.

Okay, so I got that out of the way. Now, I have to think, what is Sony really afraid of? Probably another reason why PSP/PSP-Go is getting and going to get their butts kicked time and again by DS-whatever.
