Bluetooth is fighting back. Ultra Wideband has gotten a lot of attention lately with Wireless USB and increasing adopters on the market. Bluetooth has increasingly been relegated to short-distance, low data connections, like headsets and the like. The little “blue” protocol isn’t done yet though.
Specs for Bluetooth 4.0 are finally getting standardized and it’s look pretty good. The biggest thing is that WiFi stack will run on 4.0 at speeds of up to 25MB/sec.
No outright victory for 4.0, but it’s a much needed upgrade.
4.0 will also have a much lower power draw, although not yet seen, than current wireless technologies, so it could mean leaner, faster wireless gadgets when 4.0 gets adopted.
While that’s all sexy and nice, we still think Ultra Wideband has a step up. Remember, Ultra Wideband draws slightly more power, but you can run a variety of protocols over it (including Bluetooth and USB).
Still the prospect of a lower power draw and WiFi capabilities in Bluetooth 4.0 might mean a whole bunch of interesting gadgets (like a VOIP headset that doesn’t need a PC? It could happen!), we’ll be following developments carefully.
