Android phones have few choices for web browsers. The built in browser is decent and works really well, sometimes you just want a little more.
Not until 2.1 did the Android browser even get pinch to zoom “turned-on”, while a few third-part browsers already had those features built in.
The best of the third-party bunch is the Dolphin browser. Without question it sports the most features and offers the slickest interface and smoothest experience around.
From a UI standpoint, Dolphin’s got it and everything else doesn’t. From pinch to zoom to customizable on-screen gesturing (to enable whatever command/menu item you want), Dolphin’s had it since day one.
So, it’s totally surprising that the update available for Dolphin now removes certain functions. The biggest function is Dolphin’s ability to download just about any streaming video source, including YouTube. This nice feature saves a lot of us a ton os hassle. There are other ways to “download” YouTube and streaming media sources, but Dolphin allowed you to simply answer “Save to SD Card” or “Save to Phone” when a downloadable video source came up.
Supremely smooth and absolutely elegant in its execution.
Too bad, it’s gone if you update Dolphin. There are a bunch of complaints and warnings about this “update” to steer you clear of it and Dolphin’s folks are claiming the feature was removed to comply with copyright laws and such. Still, folks are pretty upset on the message boards and suggesting (more like screaming a warning) to people not to upgrade the app on Android.
That being said, we can’t legally tell you what to do. It’s important to keep your apps updated, but this update leaves us scratching our heads. So, we’re just going to leave it up to you the app user to decide.
