At CES back in January, we were sort of surprised by the deluge of 3D. You couldn’t go take a dump at the show without someone throwing something 3D related in your face.
Gimmick? Yeah, we still sort of think it’s just a ploy to charge consumers more. Cool? Totally. But prices need to come down on the glasses (some going for $100-$200) before 3D can get more widespread.
We say sort of surprised as we expected to see a lot of 3D, just not sooooo much of it. We wanted to see more innovation, but instead we got a whole lotta me-too’s in the land of TV’s. Only Sharp, stood out as a truly improved TV with it’s 4 LED sets.
So, while we’re getting ready for E3’s version of 3D blitz, we know we’re in for a surprise no matter how much we prepare ourselves. Of course, we’ll have our crap filters on and be sure to report in on sweet 3D and cool gaming experiences, but gaming doesn’t need 3D in our opinion.
The games that we tried out in 3D at CES didn’t really use 3D to help improve the gaming experience as much as 3D was the experience. Sort of like playing certain Wii games where it’s all about the waggle and not about the game.
We’ll be looking for games to be center stage and not 3D. Unfortunately, I have this sinking feeling that it might just be the other way around.
Here’s a 3D primer for all you PS3 fans over at TG Daily.
