It’s been a while since I picked up Ace Combat 5 on PS2. A long, long while. So long, that I completely and utterly suck at it. It took me a few go rounds of getting blasted out of the sky and I was going through missiles like salt water taffy. Who doesn’t love salt water taffy?
Not only is the campaign mode (the regular game mode) fun, but there’s also an “arcade” series of shoot-everything missions to play through to. Lots of little things to discover and tons of planes to unlock. Unfortunately, you have to earn each plane. Yup, you need to buy ‘em with hard earned cash. You get that for fraggin’ an enemy, so blast away.
The thing is, I forgot just how awesome AC5 was. The graphics still stand up and there’s a real sense that you are doing mach 2 and pulling 10 G’s on a turn. Quick maneuvers will disorient you and you’ll struggle to pull out of a dive.
All in? It’s a ton of fun and I’m freakin’ glad I picked up playing it again.
I’m still trying to unlock every plane in the game, I forget the exact number but there are ton here. Having to buy the planes does suck considering the best plane in the game is somewhere along the lines of 800,000 points (you only get a few hundred to around a 1,000 points for an enemy fighter). Oh yeah, did I mention you have to quest for the plane parts? First ya gotta put the darn thing together and pull a little fighter pilot meets Link type of thing by finding its parts throughout the campaign mode hidden in a few far strewn secret (doesn’t show up on your radar until your right on top of it) hangers.
You get graded for each level and I’ve got the top “S” grade on all of the 28+ levels except for for the one titled “8492″. Those freakin’ enemy pilots swarm you 8-10 at a time and blast missiles at you from all directions.
Yeah, it’s hard. But it’s so hard, it’s fun. Well worth a grab if you haven’t tried it yet considering AC5 is going for $10-$15 new.
