I’m going to add to the rampant speculation for an iPhone 4 hardware fix to the antenna. It’s not just me though. Apple’s news that iPhone 4 White shipments have been delayed (again) along with a hard stop to the rubber bumper and case give-away program on September 30th, has led most spectators to guess that a hardware fix is in the works.

Why else would the give-away end? What about the delays in production? Couldn’t they be the result of a a hardware fix (not a complete redesign)?

It’s extremely possible, but still just rampant speculation.

It’s Friday, and why not throw some more fuel on the flames? So, here we go.

Here’s the thing. Apple’s always been super secret about their hardware revisions. It’s not something they talk about as all they really want to deliver is the overall experience. It sorta makes sense if you drink enough of the Apple Kool-Aid.

With iPhone 4’s antenna issues, focussing on it and “announcing” a hardware fix just takes away from the attention (aka: sales) they’ve got already. Why kill the momentum they’ve got with iPhone 4 now?

A hard stop on the give-away program of September 30th is significant. But does this mean that we’re going to get a full hardware fix? It certainly begs the question: what about everyone who purchases afterwards? It’s entirely possible that Apple’s saying, “get your free case now, or buy it yourself”?

Doing hardware rev to fix the issue would lead to a whole lotta pissed off iPhone users, but we’ve been down this road before haven’t we?

Remember the whole thing with iPhone batteries not holding a charge after less than a year? Go forward just a few months from iPhone 1’s launch date and you’ll see how quickly Apple “updated” the hardware and dropped the price. All led to an uproar which resulted in many iPhone 1 buyers getting an Apple Store gift card.

So, I’ll put it out there right now. It’s a lottery scratch’s worth of a WAG, but I’m betting that both iPhone 4 White delays and a hard-stop of September 30th for free cases and bumpers means a hardware rev is in our future.

While others speculate that it’s not in the cards, I don’t see it. I don’t see Apple including a rubber bumper in all iPhone 4’s after September 30th as that would just detract from how the iPhone looks and is marketed.

I can’t envision a big iPhone 4 billboard on 101 South towards Cupertino with a clean iPhone 4 and a rubber band around it as appealing to anyone.

Especially Apple.
