I highly doubt the FTC’s recent investigation of a marketing company, accused of engaging in fake reviews for certain App Store titles, will make much of an impact on the loathsome practice.
Bots, if you don’t know, have invaded comments and review blogs. They’ll put just about anything up to impress Editors like us and readers like you to buy something or promote it.
Some of them are just worse than spam crap, but others are well crafted pieces of shilling masterpieces that would make P.T. Barnum proud.
Private marketing firms sometimes participate in this type of activity to get the word out for their clients or their clients actively do this on their own.
We find these fakers and finks, reprehensible.
We work hard at what we do and do it not for fame, but because we enjoy it. Fake reviewers cheapen what we put our heats and souls into.
We take the time to test each product we get from people we reach out to. Unlike other big tech blogs where product is sent to them sans solicitation, we do it old school. We actively seek out products that we’re interested in.
Why do we do this? I’m not really sure, but I think each of us here is probably starved for attention and what better outlet than our own blog? Either that, or we are a collection of dropped-on-the-head babies grown up.
See, last year, the FTC made this ruling about endorsements on the internet. On-line reviewers have to engage in some full disclosure. If they got the product and are reviewing it for a fee, they have to disclose that fact. Or if they are retained by the company or an agent of the company to review the product, likewise they have to disclose this fact.
At Tech Bucket Blog, we never get paid for any of our reviews. We dig up our stories with good ol’ fashioned research and actually talk to people from whom we want certain products from. Our reviews are never influenced monetarily or otherwise. In fact, a lot of the reviews you see here are actually written by 2 or 3 people. Our testers provide our Editors with comments and test results. We take these, along with our Editor’s own opinions on the product and test of it and write up a review.
If we bought something, we’ll tell you that we bought it or if we got it for review from a company, we’ll let you know. Bottom line, you’ll know where we stand honestly, everytime.
