Wii sales are cooling off. Nintendo’s hype machine is set on this year’s versions of tried and true franchises (Zelda, Mario and Samus), with the yet to be seen towering pile of shovelware branded as “family fun”.

Sad, but if families actually played that crap, it’d probably boil down to dysfunctional freakin’ fast.

3DS’s hype hasn’t really moved much since E3.

Nintendo’s keeping the focus on what’s available right now and within the next month or so. Of course they want gamers to gobble up more DSi/DSi-XL’s in time for the holidays before Nintendo cashes in again on 3DS in March 2011 (and they will cash in).

But, the rumor mill is pumping with Wii HD or Wii’s follow-up. Nintendo hasn’t released a slightest peep, but just a few morsels here and there. They tell us we’re going to be impressed and we’re going love it. Of course we’re going to love it. As long it plays Mario, Zelda and Samus, why wouldn’t we? After that, we might not care so much.

The rumors are mostly boring dribble. Efforts to grab a few more pageviews and prestige on search engines more than fact. They’re all pretty poor with a few even saying Nintendo’s going to release Wii2 in March 2011.

As much as I’d like for them to be true, the rumors are not. What we do know is that the next PlayStation, Xbox, or Wii will not be available for at least another 3 years.

Each console maker has stated over the past few months that next gen consoles might be in development, but they are working to squeeze at least 3 more years out of current hardware. Hardware development is expensive and Nintendo aside, Sony and Microsoft have each shoved a lot of cash into their respective systems.

Keep in mind, PS2 is still alive and healthy. Think on that, next time you read a next gen Wii rumor.
