Android knows it’s got a few more months before the real battle begins. Once iPhone goes multi-carrier in the US, it’ll be a head-to-head battle for your mobile money.
Android has always been the “other” OS on the non-iPhone carrier (Verizon). While iPhone’s been the device (and OS) that has set the mobile standard, Android has always drawn comparisons to iPhone and iOS.
You can’t look at an app review or feature review of an Android device without “something, something, iPhone…” gracing the write-up. With iPad now making iOS even bigger (and supposedly more accessible); Android keeps getting the middle child treatment.
Now, Android is finally in the “pad” computing game. Multiple manufacturers are bringing out Android pads in the next few months. Soamsung’s leaked device is one of the headliners, but Motorola’s got one, so do a few Asian manufacturers too.
Exciting? Totally. No doubt Google will up the ante with access to Google Books and easy downloads of the millions of public domain books that would look awesome on an Android tablet.
But for all of Android’s positive momentum, Apple still owns the app space and there’s no more widely used medium like the venerable iTunes Store for access to movies, books, TV shows, games and of course music.
In the end, a device needs content to deliver for us to consume. While Android is a solid OS for a smartphone, sadly, it’s got a long way to go to deliver content like an iPad (or even an iPhone) does today.
So get excited over the options that you’ll be enjoying in the next few months…but you and I both know, you’ll be keeping one eye on an iPad.
