This is news that I’ve been waiting for. Piers Morgan from America’s Got Talent (one of our favorite junk, but so so fun TV shows) will be taking over for Larry King on CNN’s Larry King Live in January.
Larry King retires from his long running show, a CNN staple, in December. CNN’s been looking for a replacement host for the past few months and a ton of names have been rumored.
For some strange reason (maybe it’s the British accent that I’m falling over for), I can’t wait to see Piers taking over for Larry King. It’s not like I don’t watch Larry King Live. I do and it’s a great show. Talk show format with actual current events and news? You’d think the formula would’ve been copied and stolen a hundred times by now.
Other networks have tried, but they’ve never gotten the secret sauce of it. Larry King’s show has always been about that solid blending of intellect, politics, debate and of course, comedy.
It’s expected that Piers Morgan will inject some younger demographics into the show. And while most of America (and the world) can’t take the direct honesty of Piers’ judging, the harsh but somewhat never crass commentary is always a part of the entertainment industry. Rarely do auditions go with mostly positive comments, instead if you stink, you’ll hear it.
I’ve never minded his comments and I find them rather funny. Still, it’ll be interesting to watch Larry King Live (or whatever it’s going to be called) when Piers takes over.
Let’s all pray that Larry King and CNN don’t pull a Conan.
(Editor’s Note: Why do we love AGT? I have no clue. But this modern day form of Vaudville/talent show on TV is just so good to watch. We look forward to it every summer. Oh and Piers Morgan has done a stint as an Editor of a tabloid magazine, so he’s not without borderline journalism experience.)
