I’m starting to really like those guys at Wasabi Gear. Make friends and get a bunch of gear from them. Along with the host of USB 3.0 gear, we also got a nice 2.5 inch external drive enclosure that’s almost fashionable.

This is an USB 3.0 enclosure that supports 2.5″ SATA drives that is bus powered. The look is definitely iPod with a shiney-reflective finish on the metal backing and a matte-black plastic finish on the the front. Package includes a USB 3.0 cable, fake-leather carrying pouch, mounting screws and a little screw-driver. I love it when they include everything you need in the box.

The case is easy to open with a simple and slightly-firm slide upwards. Once the insides are exposed, you simply slide out the electronics, plug your drive cables in, mount the drive into the backing and screw-in the two locking screws to keep the enclosure from opening when you don’t want it to.

Performance is exactly where you’d expect for USB 3.0 enclosure. On a 320GB 2.5″ SATA drive, we got read/writes around 133 MB/sec. Performance will depend on data type, drive type, and USB 3.0 adapter.

That’s it. OS independent (of course) so you can use it wherever. Bus powered, so you don’t need any additional power cables. Priced at around $20, it’s an easy way to reuse your old SATA drives from your laptops or put together a cheap external “pocket” drive for everyday use.
