I have nothing but compliments to Nintendo. Their repair and customer service process is stellar. But, it all comes with a price. An out of warranty Wii repair for noisy disc drive will cost you around $93 (includes taxes and shipping fees).

The experience is second to none. Nintendo communicates with you, albeit through robotic e-mails and messages, every single step of the way. Instructions on what to do (where to get labels, what to include, how to back-up, etc.) are very clear and easily accessible.

Once you start the process from Nintendo’s website, it’s all pretty much out of your hands. Box it up, print the label (pay before hand of course), drop it off and that’s it.

Once the Wii arrives at the repair facility, you get a note from Nintendo informing you. When it’s done, you get a note as well. The “communication” is fast, but annoyingly my e-mails were always in english and spanish. Not that spanish is bad or anything, but it basically doubles the message, which I think is a bit lazy on Nintendo’s part.

The entire process took about a week from when I dropped off my Wii at FedEx. Nintendo tells you it takes about 9-10 days from when they receive your Wii. The repairs are handled by contractors for the most part so it’ll depend on where your repair is directed. Still, the turnaround time is pretty darn fast.

Once you get the unit back, you’ll find documentation telling you they confirmed the issue you reported and repaired it and how to start the Wii up again. The documentation is pretty good when it comes to restoring the Wii’s memory, re-syncing Wii remotes, etc.

While the process was slick and painless, I still found it costly. I mean $93??? C’mon, that’s nearly half the price for a new system (with Wii MotionPlus and in a sexy red SMB color scheme).
