I'm not sure I buy into the whole "teach your baby while it's in the womb" type of thing. Search for it and you'll find "studies" signed off on by "reputable" doctors with all the right credentials, but you've never heard of them attached to any other "study". Yes, the overuse of quotes is completely intentional. Simply put, I don't buy any of it, but..... [ read more ]

Wireless speakers have come a long way from the FM radio method of connecting them. While folks still design and attempt to use RF for getting one of the holy grails of consumer speaker installation, the quality of audio produced has always suffered. The attempts though have come a long way. Be it UWB radios, RF, bluetooth, even IR and proprietary..... [ read more ]

Don't worry. We know you've never heard of "clingo" before. Neither have we, but you'll soon hear about it on infomercials and retailers everywhere. Clingo is one of those sticky pads that are so common these days, but here's the thing. It's super stickier than anything else out there today. It's called "clingo" because everything "clings" to it (get..... [ read more ]

MusicSkins last year grabbed attention at CES with launching their exclusive Beatles line-up of iPod/iPhone (and others) skins and wraps. Custom designed logos and Beatles album art made their booth totally popular and one of the must-have items for Beatles fans. Throw in Beatles now being completely available on iTunes and it's been a banner year for..... [ read more ]

Comparing sound bars to full 5.1 or 7.1 setups is really, really unfair. You can't get the quality from 6 or 8 (I'm counting the sub-woofer as a speaker) speakers that you would get from an array of drivers and tweeters like you have on a sound bar. But CES 2011 showed us that sound bars are getting much, much better. The sound is getting richer and..... [ read more ]

Sometimes over doing something is a good thing. I've never been one to say more is better in Speaker World and I still say Phil Spectre's Wall of Sound crap took The Beatles Let It Be and took it down a few notches (yes, I prefer Let It Be...Naked, 2003). Like anything, numbers work sometimes and sometimes no. With HiVi's Swan Speaker series, it's all..... [ read more ]

Lines at CES 2011 were everywhere this year. Experts call this a good sign for Las Vegas, the economy and the industry. It means things are turning around. More people traveling means more people working sooner or later (maybe sooner) and a turn-around the "Great Recession". Me? I don't like lines. All that other stuff is a crock of hooey if you ask..... [ read more ]

I've always been interested in sound bars. The "way" to get 5.1 sound in a small space without investing in all the wires, money and did I mention space? that is required of a true 5.1/7.1 system. Manufacturers who market "near 5.1" through their bars bother me. It's just not possible. A wider sound-stage, yes, but no way it's true discrete 5.1. It's..... [ read more ]
