I admit, I cheated. I didn't eat exclusively emergency food like I was supposed to today. I had some leftover chicken soup my mom brought me over the weekend and I dug into for an early lunch today.
Not a lot of soup though, just about half a bowl's worth, so I wouldn't say broke rules that bad. Besides, I'd have to clean out my fridge first if I were to lose power anyways!

Nothing says morning like bacon and eggs. In an emergency situation, you might not have access to basic necessities like water and shelter, so simple things like bacon and eggs become a certifiable luxury item.
Mountain House, a division of Oregon Freeze Dried, Inc., offers exactly such a luxury when you're camping or in an emergency situation.
We purchased two 72-hour packs from Amazon.com..... [ read more ] Mar 02
We're just about wrapping up our special series on "geek" survival gear from last week. We've got a few more things to finish up including our final food testing and a look at one of our favorite military style packs.
Last week, Sara and I got through 3 whole days of physician monitored, 1200 calorie days on nothing more than food bars and emergency water rations. We both lost some weight as..... [ read more ] Feb 27
You might not remember it, but "Rambo" knives were all the rage back when Rambo (First Blood Part II) first came out. Only when the knife made it's transition to infomercial TV's back in the mid 80's it completely lost it's movie screen identity.
What we did get is a "survival" knife with wet-proof matches, fishing hook and line, key rings with a "saw blade line", and a fluid compass built..... [ read more ] Feb 26
Our "geek" survival gear series this week went really well. We're still not done though. Originally this was supposed to be a full week starting on Monday, but since our gear arrived late and near the middle of the week, we're having a little spill over into next week Monday.
Sara and I will be taking the weekend to recover (again, under Doctor..... [ read more ] Feb 26
Yeah, we used batteries to help you get an idea of how big the bars are. If you're shoving these into an emergency pack, you might be better off with extra batteries.
9 meals of this stuff and I can't really say their ideal nutrition wise. The taste really wears you down. I switched mid-day yesterday to the lemony bars away from the coconut flavored ones and still they tasted bad.
I can't..... [ read more ] Feb 26
After 72 hours (3 full days), 9 meals worth of eating food ration bars, I have to say it's been a pretty unpleasant experience. Total weight loss over 3 days for is more than 7 pounds. My Doctor tells me my blood pressure is down much more than normal and he recommends I rehydrate and take a multi-vitamin everyday for a couple of days. The weight loss is mostly just water weight and getting..... [ read more ] Feb 25
Our look at some essential geek survivor gear is in full swing. We've covered time pieces, phones, and of course food and water.
But what's a look at survivor gear without mentioning our hero for all of this, Les Stroud? Not much that's what.
We're big fans of Survivorman and doing our little controlled experiment (under MD supervision of course) has proven to us that Mr. Stroud is a..... [ read more ]
