Hardware makers know this. If you let someone borrow a prototype unit, it'll get outed for sure. Units get left behind (stolen? I'll leave it alone), lost (stolen?), or just plain spotted by eagle eyed bloggers and media types everywhere.

HP is rolling out it's tablet a-la iPad and there are more than a few others in the PC space throwing up tablets in the same way. Dell also recently announced their's, with a few folks in the press getting a look at it.
